Sometimes it can be seen as 'cringy' when adults start to use abbreviations but sometimes they are using them purely for convenience and definitely not to embarrass their children.
However, someone on MumsNet is getting fed up of adults referring to university as 'uni' as it apparently 'grates' on them.
Writing on the forum, they said: "Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers [MumsNetters] talking about their DC [dear children] going off to 'uni' or even about their own time at 'uni'. Just call it what it is: university."
Of course, other users weren't so happy with the poster's complaints and most of the 654 replies were as sarcastic as you would expect.

One reply pulled apart the abbreviations the poster used in their original post. They wrote: "I will. If you stop saying 'let's' and use 'let us'. Oh, and if you stop saying MNers rather than Mumsnetters. Oh, and if you stop saying DC rather than dear children." [sic]
Another user added: "I would but we have guests and I am too busy preparing luncheon."[sic]
A third hit back: "I think most people call it uni don't they? No worse than pram, bra, phone or gym. What is your objection? I'm actually interested what about the word could be problematic."[sic]

A final user couldn't quite believe something like this could annoy someone. They wrote: "Always astounds me that there are people out there who give a sh*t about stuff like this." [sic]
Some users did agree with the poster and admitted that the word 'uni' shouldn't be used by adults and irritates them too.
One said: "I agree. It grates so much"[sic]

A second user added: "I agree with you OP [original poster]! I hate shortened forms of words - 3 of the worst are uni, invite and advert! What is wrong with university, invitation and advertisement? I never shorten any of these."[sic]
