Woman sparks debate after wanting to charge guests $20 to attend her gender reveal party

Woman sparks debate after wanting to charge guests $20 to attend her gender reveal party

Around 30 guests are expected to attend the event and the woman thinks her friend’s decision to charge is ‘bad taste’.

Gender reveal parties have become quite a contentious subject on the internet in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why.

There have been countless strange reports, from videos of parents destroying parties because of the gender of the unborn child to one couple even dyeing an actual waterfall blue to reveal their child's gender.

Now a woman has started a debate after revealing that her friend is intending to charge guests if they want to attend her gender reveal party.

The expectant mum is planning to make attendees part ways with $20 (£16) and as you can imagine, this has created a lot of conversation online.

The woman who posted about the charge on Reddit said she was left confused after receiving the invite, which requests guests to cover the cost of the event.

So she took to Reddit’s r/NoStupidQuestions thread to ask whether it was ‘rude’ for her friend to expect guests to pay up.

The woman explained: “A friend is throwing a decent-sized gender reveal evening party, but they’re charging guests $20 for food and drinks. Do you think it’s rude to have your guests pay for food if you’re hosting it?

“By decent sized I mean around 30 guests I think.”

Although she said she ‘didn’t mind paying’ because it’s her close friend, she thinks the decision to have a fee is ‘bad taste’.

For what it’s worth, the event will not take place at the mum-to-be’s house but rather an event space that will be fully catered.

The poster also clarified that the woman is Japanese and the party is in Japan, where fees to attend gatherings, such as weddings, are expected.

She also clarified that she is not expecting any gifts at the party.

Some commenters said that the fact the organiser wasn’t expecting gifts, and where the it would be taking place, had changed their opinion slightly regarding the fee.

One comment reads: “I think to have an event like this but say no gifts is reasonable. If people are upset, don’t go, but I think that would be the wrong choice.”

Reddit users have weighed-in on the decision to charge guests for attending a gender reveal party.

While someone else penned: “Well considering they want no gifts, I don’t think it makes your friend classless.”

And a third said that in Japan, gifts are generally not given as 'your attendance is considered the gift'.

However not everyone agreed, with some people calling out the friend for charging people to attend.

“I wouldn’t go,” one person declared.

And another Reddit user shared: “People don’t usually give gifts at a gender reveal anyway, so she’s just charging her friends and covering it up with ‘no gifts required’.

"But it’s not a baby shower.”

And a third said it was 'way beyond rude'.
