The upmarket supermarket posted a list of 'student essentials' in its latest magazine, however the suggestions didn't go down too well.

Student essentials usually mean pasta, beans and noodles - things that take seconds to cook and are cheap - but according to Waitrose, a student's cupboard Isn't complete without Swiss vegetable Bouillon powder.

Of course, Waitrose has been labelled as 'out of touch' for the list, and students aren't impressed with the suggestions.

According to the upmarket retailer, the must-have items students should be stocking up their cupboards with include: Marigold Swiss vegetable bouillon powder (£2), Aspall organic cyder vinegar (£1.70), Waitrose cooks' ingredients organic Italian seasoning (£1.89), Belazu Rose Harissa paste (£4.35) and Clearspring organic Tamari soya sauce (£3.15).

Apart from the items being a little too pricey for your average student's budget, totaling at almost £13 before you have an actual meal, social media users weren't too sure whether anyone even knew what the items were.

Outraged Twitter user Andrew Stronach tweeted the 'starter kits for fledgling cooks' on his account. He said: "The Waitrose concept of essential cooking staples for new students!?!"

Students then took to the social media platform to point out how 'ridiculous' they thought the list was and show the reality of what they are planning on eating.

One user wrote: "One of my go-to meals at uni was rice and cheese. Just plain white rice with grated cheese. Apparently, I thought it was good. It wasn't[sic]."

However, the best replies came from the parents who have sent their children off to uni with a food package.

One parent wrote: !Uh oh...my son has just gone off with 3 jars of coffee, 4 packs of Super Noodles, 2 Pot Noodles and a bottle of Nandos peri peri sauce."

Another added: "Mines got pot noodles, bread, beans, cheese and a couple of frozen pizzas. [sic]"

Some students did, however, mention that Waitrose is quite good for reduced food items, which can be as low as 19p sometimes.

A spokesperson for Waitrose told Metro: "All these ingredients go a long way and can be the basis of many simple, tasty and great value home cooked meals."

Waitrose aren't the only supermarket that have faced Twitter backlash this week, Tesco also came under fire when they announced a partnership with Jamie Oliver.

It seems like Twitter is full of people who can't forgive him for removing their favourite treat from their school dinner as they didn't hold back their feelings towards Tesco's announcement.

One user wrote: "Nooooooo whhyyyyy???????? This guy is such a killjoy on everything tasty. BRING BACK TURKEY TWIZLERS AND DONT TAKE AWAY ANY MORE OF MY SUGARY, FATTY OR SALTY FOODS [sic]."
