The BBC has snapped up political thriller The Looming Tower, and the series charts the events leading up to the 9/11 terror attacks back in 2001.

Originally airing on US streaming platform Hulu, the 10-part drama hit screens on Friday, 26th April and it already has viewers gripped. You can watch the trailer here:

Sue Deek, head of programme acquisition at the BBC describes the series as: "Brilliantly weaving archive footage with tense and compelling drama, The Looming Tower is a fascinating and illuminating deconstruction of the personalities and events that ultimately led to the horror of 9/11."

The series is based on the book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, and is set in the late 1990s.

It follows the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda as well as the growing rivalry between the CIA and the FBI, who are conflicted over who can best deal with the threat of terrorist attacks.

Joining the line-up is Jeff Daniels as John O'Neill, the chief of the New York FBI's counter-terrorism unit, and he received an Emmy nomination for the role when it aired in the US on Hulu.

You'll recognise Daniels from a number of films, including Dumb and Dumber and Terms of Endearment.

Tahar Rahim (The Prophet) portrays Muslim Lebanese-American agent, Ali Soufan, who also goes undercover at terrorist meeting places for the FBI.

The starry line-up also boasts Alec Baldwin as CIA director George Tenet, Wrenn Schmidt as CIA analyst Diane Marsha and Peter Sarsgaard as Marsh's CIA boss Martin Schmidt, and Bill Camp as FBI veteran Robert Chesney.

You can catch the gripping thriller on BBC Two, but if you don't want to wait for each weekly instalment, you can binge-watch the entire series now on Amazon Prime.

The Looming Tower will air weekly on Fridays for the next nine weeks at 9.30pm on BBC2
