Bake Off: The Professionals returned to TV screens on Tuesday evening, as Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin attempted to track down the best pro bakers in the country, with the help of hosts Tom Allen and Liam Charles.
The contestants - plucked from some of the top restaurants around - were set the task of making a retro pineapple upside down cake.

But it was when Cherish demanded the traditional desserts be revamped into "a showpiece dessert fit for 2020," that pretty much every viewer across the country was left making the same joke.
A dessert fit for this year? When we're all housebound, afraid and weathering a horrific pandemic? Yup, it's safe to say her request hasn't aged well.

Filmed before coronavirus, what Cherish clearly meant was something modern, new and exciting.
But given the state the world is in right now, we don't think a cake fit 'for 2020' is setting a very high bar.
"Cherish Finden has asked for pineapple upside-down cake fit for 2020...... Here it is ," one joked, alongside a GIF of an exploding pud'.

While another wrote: "'We want a pineapple upside down cake fit for 2020' Okay, deconstructed with each element at least 2m apart; nailed it #BakeOfftheProfessionals".
"Pineapple upside down cake - a desert for 2020 - a missed opportunity to do an Eton Mess tbh #bakeoff #BakeOffProfessionals," a third quipped.
As a fourth chipped in: "'Fit for 2020'- does that mean each showstopper comes with sufficient funding for the NHS? #BakeOffTheProfessionals". Yikes.

Of course, Bake Off: The Professionals was filmed before the pandemic took hold, and poor Cherish had no idea just what her words would really mean.
And neither did the competing Bake Off stars, who all produced cakes *way* too refined for a year as rough as this one.
Sigh. We suppose they weren't to know!
