We'll be the first to admit how much we love a bit of nostalgia, particularly when some of our favourite trends and styles become fashionable again.
However, there are a few fashion faux pas that perhaps should remain in the past. One of the biggest offenders is the visible thong over the low rise jeans trend.
We can almost hear Sisqó's 'Thong Song' playing somewhere right now.
The visible thong (also known affectionately as the whale tail) has come back with a vengeance in 2021, with celebrities including Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid and Kylie Jenner welcoming the trend with open arms like it's 2001 all over again.

The controversial look is practically the marmite of the fashion world, after first being bought to our attention by pop princess Britney Spears, one of the very first reality TV socialites (who also taught us how to live The Simple Life) Paris Hilton, and Academy Award winner Halle Berry.
As you can see, the list of celebrities who bought this look to our attention spans across industries and the revival seems to be doing the same.
Underwear became outerwear in what was essentially the female friendly version of sagging, the trend popularised by hip hop musicians in the 1990s. The trend is still popular today, with men wearing their trousers (or pants, if you are American) below the natural waistline.

So, who should we blame for bringing back the thong?
Well, Bella Hadid debuted her take on the exposed underwear trend on the Versace catwalk in June 2019 and it caused quite a stir. And since then, several others have followed.
Hailey Bieber debuted her baby pink visible thong interpretation at the 2019 MET Gala in 2019.
More recently though, people have been bringing back the fashion blunders of days gone by and combining the low rise jeans with the visible thong.

We believe in saving the whales, but please not this whale tail.
Kylie Jenner is probably the most dedicated denim and whale tail reviver - she posted on her instagram her donning the look and the internet lapped it up.
With so many incredible trends from the 2000s (velor tracksuits, anyone?) we can't help but think there may be better options if you want to re-live the decade.
