A Suitable Boy has swiftly become a Sunday night telly favourite, with Twitter full of praise for the period drama as it approaches its final episode airing Monday 24th August.

The BBC period drama, which follows Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala) on her quest to find love, is based on the 1993 bestselling novel of the same name by Vikram Seth.

Seth's 1500-page novel has been adapted by Andrew Davies (War and Peace) - and going by the social media reaction, emotional fans don't want the action to end.

Over the course of the series, viewers have called the drama "sublime" and "one of the best things on TV", while others said they had been left "crying".

One emotional fan wrote: "I've read A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth at least five times. I consider it to be a masterpiece, so I was a bit dubious about the BBC adaptation. I have to say, other than it not being long enough, it's sublime."

Another wrote: "Imma watching A Suitable Boy and crying its so freaking beautiful."

While a third chimed in: "Aww yes!! A new episode of A Suitable Boy. This series makes me want to sit in a garden with mango trees talking to my elders, sharing stories late into the warm night."

Other Twitter users who had read the book commented that they were "ready to be devastated by the end all over again", while some called the series "one of the best things I have watched on TV in a long time."

Talking about the telly adaptation, author Seth previously told the BBC: "I realised that even without my involvement, [the BBC had] in fact lined up lots and lots of ducks in a row.

"There were only two or three ducks missing - the largest missing duck, of course, was me.

"They were very serious about the project and their enthusiasm was infectious... Everything was signed and sealed in a matter of weeks."

The final episode of A Suitable Boy airs at 9pm on Monday 24th August on BBC One.
