This is disgusting, pure and simple.

Most of us have enjoyed the Euro 2020 tournament in a respectful way, and have been thrilled to cheer on the England team who have done incredibly well in each match they've played.

But for every person who has civilly watched and engaged with the so-called 'beautiful game', there are also vicious and loutish hooligans who have trashed the England team, caused chaos on the streets and written sickening things online during the tournament.

And in the snowballing excitement of the final which took place on Sunday night, many trolls hijacked the 'It's Coming Home' slogan associated with the England team to crack cheap jokes about missing child Madeleine McCann.

One football fan on Twitter shared a skin-crawling gag that someone had posted on Instagram about Maddie, who went missing aged just three in 2007.

Captioning his tweet as "This is f***ed," the image was a poll, showing a picture of Maddie in an Everton shirt next to the England 2020 Euros squad.

The question the poll asked was: "Settling an office debate. Who would you rather came home? Football or Maddie?"

Some fans were reeling at the poll, with one commenting: "F***ing hell."

It was a joke that was cracked repeatedly on Twitter throughout the final, which England lost to Italy when the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

The behaviour of England fans has been heavily criticised throughout the tournament, with multiple high-profile figures slamming the actions of some during and immediately after England were defeated.

Huge crowds of people gathered outside Wembley Arena and in Leicester Square ahead of the match, despite fears of coronavirus cases still rising, with flares set up, causing a nuisance. Meanwhile, a security breach at the stadium saw several fans try and get into the match without a ticket.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have also been victims of horrendous racist abuse, after the three teammates failed to score their penalties in the nail-biting final minutes.

Prince William condemned the outpouring of racism from English football fans, writing on social media he was "sickened" by the display.
