Home Bargains has announced its stores won't be opening on Boxing Day to allow its staff to have a well-earned break this year.

While the Boxing Day sales are synonymous with a huge surge in shoppers looking to get discounted products with their Christmas money, the high street chain says it won't be getting involved this year.

Instead, it wants its 17,000 staff across 500 stores to have a well-deserved break with an extra day off, as the discount chain is also closed on Christmas Day.

Staff won't have to give up a day of their precious holiday allowance either, and will shut up shop on Christmas eve as usual.

Founder and managing director of Home Bargains Tom Morris says staff should be able to spend the day with their family and friends rather than at work. The shop will be remaining closed until 27th December.

"Christmas is a significant period in the retail calendar, and with staff across the business spending months building up to the occasion every year, we wanted to give them an opportunity to relax and truly enjoy the break with their loved ones," he said in a statement.

Tom continued: "Home Bargains is a family-run business and we know the importance of being with loved ones at Christmas time.

"We also appreciate that our staff work tirelessly to keep over 500 of our stores running like clockwork, so giving everyone Boxing Day off is our way of saying thank you for their hard work and commitment.

"We look forward to welcoming shoppers back through our doors on Thursday 27th December."

Last year, 17 million shoppers turned out on Boxing Day to spend £4.5 billion in the UK.

Despite the staggering figures, some shoppers fear that the days of the Boxing Day sales may be coming to an end with the rise of American dates such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday providing big discounts instead.

Many other shops are yet to announce their Christmas opening hours ahead of the sales.
