Gay Penguin ‘Power Couple’ Adopt Second Egg After Hatching First Chick Last Year

A true love story.

We're a sucker for a good old animal love story, and this might be the best one yet.

Meet Sphen and Magic...the gay penguin power couple living at Sydney's Sea Life Aquarium who are about to adopt their second child.

The male gentoo penguins have made quite a name for themselves at the attraction, previously having hatched an egg together in October 2018.

But keepers recently noticed they were keen to be parents again as they were spotted building a new nest together for breeding season.

Penguin supervisor Tish Hannan told 10Daily: "They have the neatest and largest nest in the colony and when we noticed that another couple were struggling to incubate two eggs at the same time, we made the decision to foster the second egg to the power couple of the colony.

"Baby Sphengic (as he is now known) had an excellent start to life under their care and while she's still a bundle of energy and very loud, she's matured nicely but still quite unsure as to what all the adults are doing this breeding season.

"Sphengic may or may not have a little brother or sister in a few weeks, we're yet to confirm if the egg is fertile."

You might have already heard of Sphen and Magic if you watched Netflix show Atypical, where the story of their first foray into parenting was documented on screen.

According to Sea Life, Sphen and Magic are utterly in love and are often seen waddling around the aquarium together and going for romantic swims as a pair.

Sphen even made it official by handing him a "special stone" - "the equivalent to proposing in the love language of penguins".

They aren't the only gay penguin couple either, as Sea Life London also house a lesbian couple, who followed in their footsteps and hatched their first egg in September.

We're obsessed.
