Woman divorcing husband after he gave cat to animal shelter without her permission

A cat owner has announced plans to divorce her husband after he gave her beloved pet to an animal shelter without permission.

Anyone with a pet will know they're a full, if usually quite furry, member of the family, and losing them can be one of the toughest situations to have to go through.

So when one cat owner found her pet suddenly torn away from her without warning, she decided to take action.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that she decided to adopt her cat, Benji, to try and make herself feel better after losing her father.

"This may sound crazy to some, but I really believe Benji is the reincarnation of my dad," she wrote. "Even if I am crazy the thought brings me comfort and I don’t see anything wrong with it."

However, despite the fact the cat brings her joy, the woman said her husband sees her relationship with Benji as 'strange and unhealthy'.

Things took a turn when the woman took a girls' trip with her mum and sisters, and when she was gone her husband allegedly took it upon himself to rehome Benji, with no warning whatsoever to his wife.

The woman initially thought Benji must have escaped outside, but after a 'frantic search' her husband told her the cat was 'staying with a friend'.

In a follow up post, which has been re-shared on Reddit, the woman explained that she demanded to her husband she get Benji back.

She called the friend who was supposed to be looking after the cat, and was told they'd been given the animal 'fair and square'. It was only when she contacted the friend's wife, who had 'no idea' about Benji, that she learned the cat was actually at a local shelter.

"I immediately tracked the shelter down to retrieve my boy, I had all my documents needed to prove he is mine, and he has a microchip," the woman explained.

After rescuing the cat, the woman went straight to her sister's house, where she declared she'd be 'staying for the time being'.

Her action against her husband wasn't going to stop there, though, as she added: "My sister had been through divorce and has remarried, so she will help me get all my ducks in a row and prepare to file for divorce."

The woman admitted she is 'heartbroken' over the turn of events, but is thankful that her cat is 'home safe'.

"My brother will be picking up any necessities from my house for me, I haven’t been home or seen my husband since I left for the shelter," she said. "My family has supported me in my decisions and they are all willing to do whatever it takes to help me when I may need them."
