Best man threatens to pull out of wedding after his new girlfriend isn't invited to ceremony

Best man threatens to pull out of wedding after his new girlfriend isn't invited to ceremony

The bride said that she doesn’t like new people in her life.

People are completely divided after a man said he won't attend his best friend's wedding because his girlfriend of six months hadn't been invited.

To make it all worse, he was meant to be the best man. Yikes.

We’re often told that weddings are supposed to be the happiest day of our lives.

It’s all too easy to get swept up dreaming about the day and forget that often, weddings come with a whole host of issues to contend with, including the all-important guest list.

One man took to Reddit’s ‘Am I The A*****’ forum to ask for advice on whether or not he should attend his best friend’s big day after learning his girlfriend would only be allowed to attend the evening part of the ceremony.

He wrote: “One of my best friends has recently got engaged to his girlfriend of 4 years, they will be getting married next year and I was over the moon for them."

He was then asked to be best man - and said he would never have considered saying no, but his girlfriend’s absence from the ceremony has forced him to reconsider.

The groom reasoned with him that 'they were only allowed 50 people to the ceremony and 100 to the evening, and any additional seats will cost them money', a point easy to understand with the cost of weddings.

The Reddit user continued that if it were as simple as initially explained, he wouldn’t feel angry - but further revelations about the guest list made his blood boil.

“I found out that people they met online playing video games have been invited to the day, and not only that but their partners have also been invited," he continued.

"It just feels like a bit of a slap to the face, being the best man and not being allowed one space.”

If that wasn’t bad enough for the potential best man, he added: “The bride has often said that she doesn’t like new people in her life.”

The Reddit user has now told his best friend he not only intends to pull out of being his best man, but he also doesn’t want to be in attendance for the wedding in general.

“I know this may make me the a***** because I’m throwing away years of friendship for something that likely wasn’t a huge consideration for them," he said.

“Knowing how this had made me feel, I don’t think I’d be capable of giving a nice speech during the day."

Reddit users were quick to jump in and give their take, with one declaring: “It is not for you to decide who watches the ceremony and who doesn't.”

Another chimed in: “You’re going to feel very stupid if you torpedo this friendship and then your GF of only six months dumps you in a couple months.”

Not everyone sided with the groom though. One Reddit user wrote: "He is simply refusing to attend an event without his gf, how on earth it makes him an ass?"

Another wrote: "Wtf?? Online gamer friends are granted a +1 but the best man isn’t?? How in the hell do you ppl think this way?"

The best man then returned to Reddit to issue an update, writing: "We are all a tight knit group of friends and see each other regularly (partners and all), it’s just that my partner doesn’t get an invite when it comes to social events hosted by the bride and groom.

"I know for a fact if the roles were reversed and she wasn’t invited to my wedding there would be hell to pay."

He concluded: "I can see quite clearly that I’ve over reacted and that things could have been resolved in a different way."
