Pharmacist shares correct way to use dehydration tablets to cure your hangover

One woman says she's been using the go-to tablets 'wrong for 27 years'

A pharmacist shared the correct way to use dehydration tablets after so many people realise they’ve been failing to cure their hangovers properly.

Australian pharmacist, Jamil Karaki, blew TikTok users’ minds when he called out the mistakes they’ve been making.

Anyone who enjoys having a few drinks out and about have all been there the morning after, when our mouth feels like the Sahara and we just want to down an endless stream of water.

And while some will simply opt for downing a drink, many Aussies will level it up with a dehydration tablet, often a Hydralyte – also used for sickness and general dehydration.

If you are one of these people, it’s likely you’ve been doing it wrong.

Karaki revealed you probably need many more than just one tablet.

“Each tablet from this tube has to be dissolved in 100ml of water,” he said.

“So if you go to the shops and buy a bottle of water that’s 600mL and decide to dissolve some Hydralyte in it to make you feel better, then you will need six of those tablets to make it up to the right concentration or it won’t be hydrating you properly.”

Karaki shared how to actually take the tablets.

And then another common mistake is the urge to absolutely down the full load of water, when the pharmacist points out: “Sip don’t scull.”

Your body needs opportunity to actually absorb the liquid for recovery.

And finally, you can’t just be sipping on it throughout the day – you need to get on with it.

Karaki said: “If you’ve made up the solution of Hydralyte, you have two hours to drink it — unless you’re keeping it refrigerated.”

Users couldn't believe they've been using it wrong for so long.

The pharmacist’s response came after Aussie Courtney Paige released she’d been using the tablets ‘wrong for 27 years’.

The woman had been popping only one, maybe two, tablets into a one-litre bottle of water.

Plenty of other Aussies were shocked by the revelation as they wrote: “I really need to start reading instructions and stop assuming.”

And another put: “I’d been having 1 at a time all these years.”

The instructions for taking Hydralate are: “Remove two tablets from tube and replace the cap tightly. Dissolve in 200ml of fresh, cold drinking water. For babies under six months, use freshly boiled and cooled water,” they state.

“Sip slowly and frequently while symptoms persist. Discard unused solution after two hours or 24 hours if refrigerated.

“Do not mix Hydralyte with cordial, fruit juice, soft or sports drinks. Always dissolve in water. Never place tablet directly into mouth.”

As always, you should always read the label before using.
