Canicross: Here's Why Running With Six Legs Is Better Than Two

There's no shame if you and your dog love nothing more than cuddling up on the sofa with a dog biscuit and a bourbon. But 2019 could be the year you find a new layer to your relationship with your furry BFF.

According to Cani-fit: "Canicross is the sport of cross country running with dogs, it is dog powered, so they are harnessed, attached to the human and run in a team. The human is the driver, directing the dog from behind with voice commands."

So what makes it better than a brisk walk around the block? Well the benefits are that it not only multitasks to boost your fitness levels at the same time as your dog's but it also allows your doggo to use their brain in a work mode - something snuggling on the sofa and dressing them up as baby shark unfortunately doesn't allow for.

This isn't just about putting on your dogs lead and running off into the distance (as romantic as that vision is). That's just a fast-track to a garrotted dog and dislocated shoulder.

You need the proper equipment, to commit to ongoing training so your pooch can understand your voice commands and to find environments that are suitable to run in. Your dog's and your own safety depends on it.

Here are three basic pieces of kit you'll need to invest in:

  1. A waist belt for the hooman with adjustable leg straps and a fit that prevents back strain.
  2. A properly-fitted harness for your doggo. This will depend on your dog's size, power and running style (because let's face it - you've seem your pooch run for a ball and it can be chaotic).
  3. A special bungee line to attach the two of you to each other. One end attaches to your waist belt and the other to your dog's harness. The stretchy bungee line will keep you close but absorb any shock from your dog pulling - because let's face it: they're faster than you are.

You can buy all of it here.
