EastEnders Praised For Raising Awareness On Male Breast Cancer

The long running soap has been praised for the storyline.

EastEnders has been praised for its male breast cancer storyline, after character Stuart Highway was diagnosed with the disease this week.

Stuart had visited a doctor after noticing a rash on his chest. After an examination, the doctor found a lump and Stuart was sent for a biopsy.

In Tuesday evening's episode of the soap, Stuart was diagnosed with breast cancer in emotional scenes.

Speaking about the storyline, actor Ricky Champ said: “I feel honoured to be trusted with such an important storyline.

“We will see Stuart really struggle with the fact he has cancer, and to learn that it’s breast cancer is really difficult for him to understand.

“I hope by shedding a light on male breast cancer, more men will be aware of it and seek out a doctor if they notice anything wrong.”

And viewers have been praising the soap for tackling such a storyline, with one person writing on Twitter: "Very important awareness raised on male breast cancer!!! It’s not just us girls who are at risk, men can be at risk too! Check your pecs, breasts, chest. It could save your life #eastenders."

While another added: "My heart breaks for Stuart. I know Ricky Champ will do the male breast Cancer storyline justice."

And a third wrote: "I’m not one for the soaps but I caught Eastenders earlier and there’s a Male Breast Cancer storyline, great to these things getting brought into popular shows."

A fourth said: "I've not watched #Eastenders in a while, but so glad to see they're covering male breast cancer. Not an issue that's given enough light. Still remember one of my old residents trying to understand how he was being investigated for breast cancer, as a 90+ year old man."
