New Movie Promising Young Woman From Killing Eve Showrunner Looks Amazing

Lockdown has seen many of us forced to stay indoors and cosy up on the sofa binge-watching TV shows and films.

However, we now have something brand new, fresh and exciting to watch in the shape of pitch-black comedy-drama, Promising Young Woman.

Promising Young Woman is the directorial debut of Emerald Fennell, who previously took over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge for season two of compelling cat-and-mouse drama, Killing Eve.

The film tells the story of Cassie Thomas (played by The Great Gatsby star Carey Mulligan), a 30-year-old woman looking to exact revenge on the predatory advances of some men, following the sexual assault and death of her friend.

Cassie gets her revenge on Friday nights, going to bars dressed to the nines and pretending to act drunk, in some cases almost too drunk to stand. She then waits for a "nice guy" to take her home - ie looking to take advantage of her.

Cassie waits for the man to make a move, before she then snaps out of her "drunken" state, forcing him to reassess his ways and even going as far as using violence for him to understand the extent of his wrongdoing.

Promising Young Woman was scheduled for cinematic release in the UK in April last year, but was delayed "indefinitely" due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While the film has since had a very limited release over in the States and has since been released on streaming platforms, Promising Young Woman will make its UK debut from 12th February.

Critics have lauded the film for the way it tackles difficult yet essential topics such as consent, rape and sexual assault in the world post Me Too, with Carey's performance garnering widespread critical acclaim,

Promising Young Woman has since been nominated for four awards at the Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture.

Speaking about the film's blunt social commentary, Emerald told Variety: "It's not just a movie for people who are very well-versed in all of this stuff. I feel very privileged that it's something that I care deeply about. But for generational reasons - or all sorts of reasons - lots of people haven't thought that deeply about this. And it needs to be accessible to them."

Promising Young Woman will make its UK debut from 12th February.
