As every Bake Off fan will know, last night, Channel 4 was forced to delay the opening episode of the new season to make space for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's address to the nation.

But in true Bake Off spirit, they handled it in the best way possible, and new presenter Matt Lucas' hilarious parody of the PM has now been hailed the best GBBO opener ever.

If you haven't seen it, you can watch it below:

Standing at the lectern alongside the words: "Stay alert, protect cake, save loaves" viewers described Matt Lucas' impersonation of the PM as the best they've ever seen.

From reading the announcement upside down, to explaining "bake in a tent if they want to, but don't bake in a tent" and asking Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood how to pronounce scone, fans said it was the best Great British Bake Off opening scene there has ever been.

At the end, Matt whipped off his wig and said: "All that remains if for me to say, welcome to the Great British Bake Off!"

And it went down a treat with viewers, with one writing on Twitter: "Honestly I think that's the best intro Bake Off has ever had, welcome @RealMattLucas to Bake Off :D honestly made me laugh so much."

While another added: "The Boris Johnson spoof intro for #GBBO by @RealMattLucas is one of the best things I've seen in a while."

A third tweeted: "Had to put on Channel 4+1 just to see Matt Lucas do his very best Boris Johnson impersonation and I got say I never laughed so much since watching An Audience with Billy Connolly it was so funny but I managed to survive."

"Matt Lucas is just what the country has needed to cheer us up," added another.

Bake Off fans were gutted yesterday when they found out the show would be delayed. But it was definitely worth the wait, with viewers calling it one of the funniest episodes ever.

Bakers competed to create the perfect Battenberg, six pineapple upside down cakes and a hilarious showstopper which saw contestants construct cake heads of their heroes.

Zoe Ball said 'Bake Off' had 'saved 2020' (
