Frasier fans, we've got some good news for you - the hugely popular sitcom is being revived after 17 years away.

The news was confirmed by Kelsey Grammer, who played the titular psychiatrist Frasier Crane in the series.

New episodes of Frasier will drop on Paramount+, an upcoming streaming service (previously titled CBS All Access) looking to rival Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

"Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I'd like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world," Kelsey said in a statement.

"I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane."

Apart from Kelsey, who viewers may also recognise from his roles in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and as the voice of The Simpsons' Sideshow Bob, it is not currently confirmed who else will be starring in the reboot.

The original series, which aired for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004, previously starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin. John Mahoney, who played Frasier's father Martin Crane, passed away in 2018.

The spin-off from Cheers followed newly single Frasier as he moved back to his hometown of Seattle to star in his own radio show.

However, his life as a bachelor is rudely interrupted when he is forced to take in his father, a retired detective who has mobility problems after being shot in the line of duty during a robbery.

Discussing the Frasier reboot, David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, added in a statement: "Frasier is one of the most acclaimed comedies in modern television history and truly defines premium storytelling.

"There has long been a call from fans for its return, and that call is now answered thanks to the amazing Kelsey Grammer reprising his iconic role of Dr. Frasier Crane and a brilliant creative plan from Chris Harris, Joe Cristalli [both writers and executive producers on the show] and Kelsey.

"We can't wait to reveal its next chapter on Paramount+."

A release date for Frasier is yet to be confirmed.
