As the BBC's adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People continues to fill news feeds, viewers are obsessing over an unexpected element.
Ladies and gents, please take a moment of appreciative silence for... Connell's chain.
Yep, the internet is losing its mind over the bit of bling worn by actor Paul Mescal, who plays lead character Connell Waldron.

So big is the hype that Connell's chain now has its own Insta account (you can find it under the handle @connellschain) with 17K followers.
"We stan Connell's chain" reads the bio, followed by a meaningfully placed splash emoji. Oh my!
If you've yet to get acquainted with the account, we recommend a scroll. The feed features shots of the heartthrob actor wearing his hit accessory on the sports field, in the shower and in bed.

The account - which has racked up celeb fans like model Adwoa Aboah and singer Whinnie Williams - was created by journalist Billie Bhatia after watching the show.
She told The Independent: "Connell's chain is so purposefully noticeable in the book and in the series that it had already sparked a lot of conversation between my friends.
"I searched for it on Instagram thinking 'surely someone must have posted something' and turns out nobody had, so I did!"
Frankly, the account is the gift we didn't know we needed.

But let's rewind to give some context.
If you're not familiar with Normal People, it's based on the 2018 book of the same name by Sally Rooney.
The story follows the changing relationship between two Irish teenagers, Marianne (Daisy Edgar Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal), who first meet at secondary school in County Sligo and go on to attend Trinity College Dublin.
Despite both being A-grade students, Marianne and Connell exist on opposite ends of the school social system. Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner and bullied by her peers.

Along with their differences at school, the pair are from contrasting social backgrounds.
Connell's single mother is a cleaner for Marianne's affluent family, who live in the biggest house in the area.

They're an unlikely match - but slowly, Connell and Marianne form an intimate bond that changes both of their lives forever.
The show has been praised for its thoughtful adaptation of Rooney's work, in particular the authentic chemistry between the two lead characters (seriously, we got hot under the collar) and its honest, naturalistic sex scenes.
It's now apparent, though, that the site of Paul Mescal in a chain is as much a draw as the acting - and it's driving fans wild.
"Thirst trap, I've fallen right in," commented one appreciative Connell's Chain follower.
"This account is a bit of me," added another.
"Absolute GOLD," wrote a third.
"A must-follow. Can't cope!" chipped in a fourth.
Viewers are keen to recreate Connell's look at home, too. In April, sales of neck chains reportedly rocketed by 130 per cent at ASOS.
