A dog is for life - and if you're Channing Tatum, you can turn those years with your furry pal into a Hollywood blockbuster.

Yep, the Magic Mike star is working on a road comedy titled Dog, inspired by a journey he took with his late pet pooch, who he calls "his best friend". We're not crying, you're crying.

Picked up by MGM, the movie will drop on Valentine's Day 2021.

Channing shared the news with his 17.4 million Instagram followers, posting a scenic shot of him on a motorbike alongside his beloved canine, in front of a sunset.

In another shot, Tatum can be seen snuggling up with his fluffy BFF on a quilt in the opened boot of his car.

Captioning the images, the actor wrote: "A little over a year ago I got back from a road trip where I said goodbye to my best friend.

"Now I'm making a movie inspired by her. So proud to announce that DOG will be released by @mgm_studios and in theaters next Valentine's Day weekend."

Variety
reported that the movie was sold to MGM following an "aggressive bidding war" between studios.

Tatum will star in and co-direct the film, alongside creative partner Reid Carolin. Carolin penned the script, which is based on a story by Carolin and Brett Rodriguez.

As to the plot, Dog follows two hard-charging former Army Rangers paired against their will: Briggs (Tatum), and Lulu, a Belgian Malinois, as they race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier's funeral on time.

Along the way, they drive each other crazy, confront the possibility that pet psychics are real and begin to reckon with the one thing they were trained never to do: surrender.

The movie is currently in pre-production and will begin filming in May.

Talking about the film, Michael De Luca, motion picture group chairman at MGM, said: "Having known and admired Reid and Chan for years as great guys and natural-born storytellers, I couldn't be prouder and more excited to work with them, Greg Jacobs and Glen Basner on this, their first film as directors.

"The story's strong heart, humor and power reflect not only their talent but their humanity, and all of us at MGM hope this is the first of many."
