Serena Williams 'Twirls' Into The Next Round Of US Open In Lilac Tutu

Serena Williams won straight sets at the US Open in a match against her sister wearing a lavender tutu.

This is the second time she wore a tutu to the tennis tournament, wearing a gorgeous black version for her first match.

She accompanied the picture of her outfit on Instagram with a caption, that said: "Twirling into Friday!!"

Her 'rebellious' outfits come after being told she couldn't wear a Nike black catsuit by the President of the French Tennis Federation Bernard Giudicelli back in May.

He said he would implement a dress code to stop her from wearing it again, adding: "One must respect the game and the place."

Serena had chosen to wear the black catsuit originally on the advice of her doctor, after they advised her to protect against blood clots.

At a press conference, she told everyone Giudicelli's comments were "fine", adding: "When it comes to fashion," she said, "you don't want to be a repeat offender."

Christine Brennan, a sports commentator, told NPR that she did this out of respect too.

She argued: "[She wore a tutu] after basically letting the French Open off the hook and saying - hey, you know, that's their point of view. I really like them. It's OK. So she defused any potential continuing argument."

Legendary tennis player, Billie Jean King tweeted: "The policing of women's bodies must end. The 'respect' that's needed is for the exceptional talent (Serena Williams) brings to the game. Criticizing what she wears to work is where the true disrespect lies."

The sport is full of "outdated notions", says commentator Susie Mesure in the Independent.

Another example of an outdated notion is when French tennis champion Alize Cornet was given a violation when she quickly changed her top during her match against Johanna Larsson, even though male players frequently take their shirts off between sets to change with zero comment.
