Fans Are Calling Taylor Swift's New Song 'Haunting'

Flocks of Swifties have taken to Twitter to share their views on Taylor Swift's latest release, 'Carolina'.

Unlike the American singer's previous tracks like the poppy and upbeat '22' or the more rocky and emotive 'I Knew You Were Trouble', fans are dubbing the 32-year-old's newest song 'haunting'.

One fan gave their opinions on the singer's latest track: "Taylor, it is haunting and lonely and strong and it has already burrowed under my skin! I love it so much, thank you for this."

Another tweeted: "This is beautiful. Your voice is so ethereal and haunting. The lyrics are striking and the storytelling is a masterpiece. This song has me wrecked."

"Carolina is the definition of haunting!" chimed in a third.

Some were clearly very moved by the song, with one fan tweeting an entire TikTok-essay-style monologue of who 'Carolina' was written for: "Carolina is for the sad girlies. The ones that love to be on their own but feel lonely sometimes. The ones that are obsessed with cardigans, coffees and rainy days. For the ones that love to read. For the ones that romanticise little things in life bc it makes them happy."

Some fans are even using the new song to shape their brand-new summer mood and aesthetic, putting the 'Hot Swiftie Summer officially on pause [for] Swamp Swiftie Solstice'.

Others simply want to be transported to the swampy settings of the music video: "Headphones aren’t enough, I need Taylor to throw me in a marsh while singing."

Explaining a little more about the behind-the-scenes process and the creative vision behind 'Carolina', Swift tweeted: "About a year & half ago I wrote a song about the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively & literally."

The singer continued: "The juxtaposition of her loneliness & independence. Her curiosity & fear all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness & the world’s betrayal of it."

Attached to the tweet, Swift uploaded a short clip of the lyric video for 'Carolina'.

The sepia-filtered video follows a young woman walking about in a swamp-like marshland area, painting and tearing out pages from a book, swimming and hanging out with a young man.

Many fans feel the video suits the tone of track perfectly, with one Twitter user commenting: "It's so ethereal and enchanting and mystical and I'm obsessed."

"It’s like an out of body experience!!!" wrote another.

'Carolina' dropped at midnight, 23 June, and is now available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.
