Prosecco Hangovers Are Officially The Worst Kind, According To A Wine Expert

It's official - Prosecco hangovers are the worst kind - and this is the confirmation we didn't know we needed.

According to a wine expert, the bubbles in Prosecco actually give you a worse hangover than with any other alcoholic drink.

Club Vino's sommelier and co-founder Marco Castelanelli found that the bubbles change how the liquid flows through your bloodstream - and this makes so much sense.

Castelanelli told Tyla: "If you find that you get the worst headache ever after a glass or two of Prosecco, then quite simply, blame it on the bubbles.

"Prosecco and Champagne both contain little pockets of carbon dioxide which change how the alcohol flows through the bloodstream, helping the body to adsorb the alcohol faster."

We knew it!

He continued: "Once in the bloodstream, the Co2 competes with oxygen which is why you might feel a little woozy and rather drunk rather quickly, leading to an exaggerated hangover in the form of a pounding head."

But there's no need to give up the Prosecco just yet (thankfully!). There are a few tricks, according to Castelanelli, that can help stave off that hangover. Don't drink Prosecco on an empty stomach, he advises, and drink your glass of fizz slowly.

Not only that but for every glass of Prosecco, you should also drink a glass of water. This will help reduce dehydration.

And, for those of us likely to forget this simple rule? "Drink a large glass of water before bed," says Castelanelli.
