Plant-based foodies, get excited: McDonald's is launching a new meat-free burger.

Hot on the heels of Burger King's 'Impossible Burger', the fast food chain's P.L.T. (which stands for plant, lettuce, tomato) looks similar to their other mouth-watering burger offerings but is actually made from a veggie-friendly 'Beyond Meat' patty.

The patty itself is billed as the world's first plant-based burger that looks and cooks like beef without GMOs, soy, or gluten and is available in selected Tesco stores.

The new plant-based burger is set to be trialled in 28 McDonald's locations around Canada over the next 12 weeks, starting from Monday, 30th September, for $6.49 (£3.98) plus tax.

Customers in Canada will be able to customise the plant-based burger and can choose to make it dairy-free by ordering it without cheese and their special sauce.

However, it should be noted that the patty will be cooked on the same grill as other burgers and meat-based products.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Ann Wahlgren, McDonald's vice president of global menu strategy said the sandwich, made exclusively for McDonald's, is being utilised to "learn more about real-world implications of serving the P.L.T."

"During this test, we're excited to hear what customers love about the P.L.T. to help our global markets better understand what's best for their customers."

If McDonald's receives positive feedback from the test run in Canada, the company could potentially roll it out internationally - however it has yet to be confirmed.

The launch comes months after McDonald's expanded its vegetarian offerings for meat-free fast food fans.

In January, they launched the new spicy veggie wrap alongside a Happy Meal version for children.

The veggie wrap's ingredients are dairy-free and vegan-friendly, however but the wraps themselves pass through the same toaster as the chain's buns, which contain milk, so McDonald's labels it as vegetarian.
