Big Toe Heels Are A Thing and We Are Officially Frightened

The offensive shoe style was first spotted on the Y Project runway and has been gaining a worrying amount of momentum ever since.

You know a good bit of fashion when it succeeds in accentuating our best features: a waist-cinching dress, a leg-lengthening pair of jeans, a blouse with the most flattering neckline. One thing we don't expect to draw attention to is our big toe.

It's arguably the ugliest toe on the foot, yet a sweeping new trend is seeing the focus put on the largest digit: big toe heels.

Coined by Refinery29, big toe heels were first seen on designer label Y Project's spring summer 2019 runway and have been gaining a worrying amount of momentum ever since.

We can handle a peep toe sandal, a mule or a strappy heel, but this odd style sees the rest of the toes enclosed, bar the big toe which sits proudly out in the open.

The French fashion label is currently selling the shoes for £790, which seems like a lot of money for something so offensive, but this is the same brand that bought us detachable jeans, thigh-high Ugg boots and denim undies, all of which were hit among the fashion crowd.

The big toe sandal is essentially an update on Maison Margiela's closed-toe Tabi boots which were first around in 1988 and resurged in 2018 at Vetements' autumn winter show.

They're essentially a hoof in boot form, yet we have to say they feel more acceptable that the big toe heel.

A less garish version of the big toe heel has been around this summer: big toe sandals, which see a strap around the big toe. They've been sold everywhere from ASOS to Topshop.

Far more palatable, don't you think?
