Supermarket shopper left furious over 'stupid' self-checkout rule

Supermarket shopper left furious over 'stupid' self-checkout rule

She said she 'didn’t want to ‘participate in that nonsense’

A supermarket shopper has been left fuming over a ‘stupid’ self-checkout rule, saying she simply isn’t ‘interested’ in using them if shops are going to be like this.

The modern supermarket experience is growing increasingly tech-heavy, whether it’s self-scanning your shopping as you go along or delivery robots bringing your haul right to your door.

But some people think things have gone too far – not least because sometimes they’ll walk in and out without even speaking to a single human.

One woman has lashed out at precisely that, having become furious not just over the rise of self-checkout tills, but particularly one particular aspect of that service (or lack thereof).

The woman took to social media to say she didn’t want to ‘participate in that nonsense’, having become severely frustrated by the process after realising she was essentially becoming a ‘cashier with no training’.

She called out a number of Australian supermarket chains, but also addressed her rant to ‘all other stores that have self-checkout'.

In an open letter to the stores, the woman said: "Dear Kmart, Coles, Woolworths etc etc and all other stores that have self-checkout - You are almost exclusively self-checkout now.

“The last time I was there the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.

"I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, so I just skipped the exit line and left. I heard her saying 'Ma'am' as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.

"You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.

"I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you. If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's your problem, not mine.

"Don't audit me for a position you refuse to employ any longer. Signed, All of us."

Some people miss the good old days.

The post was shared a while back, but has since resurfaced on Facebook COUNTLESS times by those who agree, who have all ‘copied and pasted’ the message onto their own feeds.

Commenting on the rant, one person said: "Unfortunately, we finally accept this as normal. Remember when somebody would fill your petrol tank, check your tyres, etc?"

Someone else commented: "I go through the self-checkouts and tell the attendant I don't know how to do it and they do it for me.”

Someone else said: "I don't use self-checkout ever. I feel it is taking jobs away from people.

"It's just another way the large companies can save money and make more profits. A lot of the time the lines are longer than the manned checkouts also."
