Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness explains why you should never sleep with your hair down

The hair stylist shared a tutorial that has gone viral on TikTok

I'm sure all of us, at one point or another, have flaked out on our night-time routines every now and then when we quite frankly couldn't be bothered.

From missing out on key skincare steps or just forgetting to take our makeup off altogether - we've all been there.

However, there's a very simple hair hack that you can do ahead of shut-eye that won't require much effort whatsoever and will only take a couple seconds.

Demonstrating the beauty tip in a TikTok video, which has since gone viral after clocking up more than 9.2 million views, Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness has explained why you should never sleep with your hair down. Have a look:

Van Ness, who is Queer Eye's resident hair stylist, shared with his 1.1 million followers on the platform the reason why and offered alternative measures to take instead to ensure 'happier' hair.

"If you're sleeping with your hair down, you're just like this," Van Ness, who identifies as non-binary but uses they/them, he/him and she/her pronouns interchangeably, began while demonstrating his hair being sandwiched against a pillow and the weight of his head.

He continued: "You're getting your hair trapped between your body heat [and] the pillow.

"You know how sometimes you wake up it's just, like, really hot. You're like 'Ooh, it's steamy in here'. That is like just keeping a 100 degree flat iron just pressed on your ends."

Van Ness explained that 'because your hair grows only a quarter to a half an inch a month' - the ends of your hair can be 'quite old'.

"Your ends are like, you know, a couple of years old," he said while grabbing his own locks. "This is probably three-year-old hair down here."

The beloved TV personality went on: "So, sleeping with hair for eight hours a night pressed up against the warmth of your body heat and the friction of your sheets - it just creates a rubbing friction tension which, ultimately, makes your ends disintegrate or just kind of break off because it's just too much heat."

He captioned the short explanation: "Why you need to stop sleeping with your hair down!"

So - how should you bundle up your barnet when it comes to beddy-byes?

In a follow-up TikTok, Van Ness said the optimum sleeping style was 'loosely tied up' with a 'silk scrunchie' to secure it.

He then instructs viewers to 'pull the hairline out' to avoid 'tension'.

"That way it's going to keep your most fragile hair, which is your ends, up and away from the body heat," he added. "You're also not going to have your hair tangle so much, your blow-dries are going to last longer, your hair is going to shinier, happier and just all over looking better."

Sold.

He added in the comments: "You can also use a silk bonnet if you have short hair!"

Guess we all need to start investing in some silky smooth hair accessories.
