Mums Praise Documentary Aiming To Break Stigma Surrounding Breastfeeding
Channel 4's Dispatches: Breastfeeding Uncovered with Kate Quilton aired on Monday, and mums are full of praise for the documentary...
The show investigated how the stigma and lack of support around breastfeeding in public is contributing to Britain having some of the lowest nursing rates in the world.
Thirty-four-year-old Kate, who gave birth to her son in June, said on the show: "You get lots of raised eyebrows, a few people tutting ... whispers. Seems totally bonkers."
And speaking to The Independent, she said: "80 percent of mums want to breastfeed and that's how they go into wanting to feed their baby. And then for whatever reason, those rates just hit the floor in five or six months - only one per cent of babies [in the UK] are breastfed exclusively at that age.
I've been a little quiet on here lately. I've been deep in the love bubble introducing this extraordinary little person to planet Earth. And right now, I'm meant to be on maternity leave and very little could draw me out of it except for making this documentary about breastfeeding. When I started breastfeeding myself a couple of months ago, I was shocked at how incredibly difficult I found it. And nobody warned me. As you approach having a baby, most of the focus is on the labour and little is spoken about the days that follow. I've found breastfeeding hard, and at times, excruciating, and I soon discovered that I wasn't the only one. Shockingly, we have some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the whole world. The WHOLE world. So why are our rates so low? And does it even matter?... This documentary answers those questions. And it will hopefully go some way in helping the mammas out there, however you feed your baby. I really hope you like it. "Our rates are the lowest in the western world and also the lowest in the planet for babies aged one - I appreciate one year old can be considered quite old for breastfeeding but to be the lowest in the world is quite shocking."
The documentary also highlights how showing women's breasts in lingerie adverts is deemed acceptable within society but a woman breastfeeding is not.
Mums watching the show took to Dispatches' Facebook page, with one mum saying: "Brilliant documentary! Well done. Hopefully it will inspire more to breastfeed. Watching the section about the different formula (totally unnecessary) my husband turned to me and said, "I'm so proud you fed our 4 kids." Me too!"
Another woman commented: "Great programme. Shed a few tears watching, the struggle is real. So much more to talk about though, needs to be a whole series to get the message through!"
A third mum said: "So refreshing thank you for promoting the boob. Brilliant documentary! 21 months feeding and still going strong x."
