ITV has announced a new psychological thriller starring award-winning actress Emily Watson - and we can't chuffing wait.

Written by actress and author Clara Salaman, the three-part drama, called Too Close, is based on the novel of the same title by Natalie Daniels.

The gritty series will follow the story of Dr Emma Robinson - played by Chernobyl star Emily Watson - a forensic psychiatrist who is assigned Connie as her next client - a woman accused of a heinous crime which she claims she can't remember doing.

As the series progresses, Connie's manipulative character manifests itself as she begins to exploit Emma's deepest insecurities, turning the two women's rapport into a complex psychological game.

As Emma draws closer to finding out what triggered Connie's criminal behaviour, it appears her attempts to seek justice will come to haunt her instead.

ITV's head of Drama, Polly Hill, who commissioned the production, has commented on the show's powerful script, saying it sparks an interesting power-play between the two main characters.

"Too Close is a brilliant script where you are never sure who has the power - the psychologist or her patient, or whether Connie is the monster she's portrayed as," she said.

Ruth Kenley-Letts, Head of Drama at Snowed-In, the show's production company similarly expressed her admiration for Salaman's writing.

"She is a bright new talent to screenwriting and it is a testament to her writing that Emily Watson, one of our finest and most accomplished actors, has signed up to play the part of Emma," she said.

Hill was similarly very enthusiastic about having Emily Watson play the show's lead.

"I'm delighted that Emily Watson is going to play Emma, who will be phenomena," she said.

Watson is known for roles such as Bess McNeil in Breaking the Waves and the award winning Janet Leach in the 2011 television biopic Appropriate Adult.
