Danish photographer, Andreas Hvid, has caused outrage in Egypt after posting a photo of himself and a woman apparently having sex on top of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Andreas is being investigated by Egyptian authorities for violating public morality in the conservative Muslim country.

But questions have been raised about the authenticity of the image he posted on his website after critics pointed out that it appears too bright to be taken at night.

A YouTube video shot by Andeas before the stunt on top of the pyramid appears to show him and a female accomplice climbing up the side of the pyramid in almost total darkness. The footage was initially believed to be fake, however, prosecutors are now investigating the video's authenticity.

Zahi Hawass, an archaeologist who is the former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities and former director general of Giza Plateau has indicated to NBC that the footage and photo is fake because there "is no way anyone can enter the Pyramids area at night" and the size of the stones don't match.

However it must be noted that others have been able to scale the pyramid in the past with a German man being arrested in 2016.

The 4,500-year-old pyramid is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and scaling it is strictly forbidden. Visitors are only allowed to climb up to a certain level before 5pm.

In the video's description, Andreas states: "In late November 2018, a friend and I climbed the Great Pyramid of Giza (aka Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid of Cheops). Fearing to be spotted by the many guards, I did not film the several hours of sneaking around at the Giza Plateau, which led up to the climb."

The video shows Andreas and the woman climbing to the top of the pyramid and looking out over Cairo before the woman removes her top.

He also posted a link to his website, which shows the explicit picture.

He told Danish tabloid Ekstrabladet he'd dreamed of climbing the giant structure "for many years".

But it quickly attracted a backlash from commenters, who branded it disrespectful.

One Twitter user commented: "ewww at this denmark guy claiming to be photographer but cant be bothered to abide simple rules. The disrespect by climbing over protected monument like pyramids like ewww what disgusting behaviour from people claiming to be from 1st nation country yucks."

"I'm sad that so many people have become so angry. But I have also received a positive response from a lot of Egyptians - something I think is worth remembering," Andreas explained.

Andreas denied they had sex on top of the pyramid, and said they were merely posing for the photo shoot.

The photographer has posted a series of images of nude figures on high rises and in unusual locations around the world on his website. Andreas says he is "forever in search of beautiful locations where you cannot be [nude]."
