The driver of a car that was full of rubbish found themselves in a messy situation after the vehicle was involved in a crash.

Police were called to investigate the accident after the Volkswagen rolled back into a parked car.

Once at the scene, officers learned that the owner was unable to reach for the handbrake in time because of the piles of waste in the way.

Some of the items in the car included plastic bags, newspapers and empty food wrappers as well as a bucket, a stool and an electric fan - handy for the heatwave on the way.

Sharing photos of the car on Twitter, Hampshire Police quipped that Boris Johnson's Toyota Previa, which was once pictured filled with coffee cups, shopping bags and mud on the seats, had nothing on the Volkswagen.

They joked: "Boris Johnson's car is a dream compared to this one! Driver couldn't get the hand brake on and rolled back into a parked vehicle. I wonder why?"

Twitter users were left in shock about the state of the car and it's no wonder the post attracted many comments about the mounds of rubbish.

One Twitter user wrote: "Oh my good grief. Surely he can't be driving round like that? It must stink like a rubbish dump in this hot weather!!"

"That is actually the most messy car I have ever seen in my life," another lamented. "Wipe your feet when you get out!!"

A third added: "Dread to think what their house is like!!!!!"

While another shared: "Maybe he's been litter picking. But could have done with a van instead".

Despite the interior of the car being a mess, fortunately there were no reports of any injuries in relation to the crash.

Although Hampshire Police are yet to say if the driver will face charges over the incident.
