Baby India was abandoned 20 days ago but the search is still on for her mother. This is so harrowing.

When Forsyth County Sherriff's Office in Georgia responded to a call from a local man exclaiming he could hear a newborn baby crying from his home nearby, no one could predict the harrowing scene they would find.

Now the police force have released a video of the chilling moment they found Baby India wrapped in a plastic bag in the Georgia woodland with her umbilical cord still attached, and it makes for distressing viewing.

Officers responded to the call on June 6, and can be seen rushing to remove their gloves before tearing open the bag as the baby girl is heard wailing inside.

As the infant emerges startled and crying, the officer can be heard saying: "Oh look at you sweetheart. Oh I'm sorry. I'm so sorry...oh look how precious you are."

After removing the newborn and cutting off her umbilical cord, the men assess her for injuries before swaddling her in a blanket. In a heartwarming moment, the tiny infant firmly grips one of the officer's fingers and makes direct eye contact.

While the search is still on for the mother, the girl has been temporarily named 'India', with police saying: "We are happy to report that Baby India is thriving and is in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services."

"We release this footage in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India and to show how important it is to find closure in this case," they added.

On Friday, 15 days after rescuing India, the sheriff's office released new pictures hoping that someone would come forward and help find her mother, according to News11.

While it is unclear whether the mother would face charges - Georgia has a Safe Haven law that allows any mother the right to leave a baby up to seven days old with an employee of any medical facility in the state - followers of the story are already taking to Facebook to express their concern over the fact that restrictions on abortion laws across the US could increase the risk of such incidents.

"These cops better get used to this, because with the abortion ban, this type of stuff is going to happen a lot more often. People are not always going to do the right thing," said one comment on People's Facebook page.

"This won't be close to stopping with abortion bans! Get ready people," added another.

The state of Alabama passed the most restrictive abortion law in recent memory last month, which could see physicians who provide abortions go to jail for up to 99 years, and offers no exceptions for rape or incest.

While the woman seeking the procedure would not be criminally liable, the law only allows exceptions if the mother's life is seriously at risk or the fetus has a fatal complication.
