Manchester Is Officially The Best Place To Live In The UK

Us Mancunians know that Manchester is the best UK city to live in - that's just a cold, hard fact.

It's the home of the nation's best loved soap, Coronation Street, plays host to two popular football teams, and has produced the likes of Oasis. So call us biased, but us Northerners absolutely love our hometown to bits.

And now it's been proven officially, as Manchester has claimed the top spot for UK cities in the 'The Economist's 'Global Livability Index' for 2018.

The worldwide table ranks 140 cities on a range of factors, including things like: political and social stability, crime rates, education and access to healthcare.

According to Manchester Evening News, survey editor Roxana Slavcheva said: "Of the top-ranked cities, Paris and Manchester recorded the biggest improvements over the past 12 months, both in overall scores and stability ratings.

"Although they have been subject to high-profile terrorist attacks in recent years, which have shaken stability and led to cumbersome security measures, both cities have shown resilience in the face of adversity."

The Manchester Arena bombing that took place last year, at Ariana Grande's concert made Manchester even stronger.

The iconic worker bee symbol became a new meaning of unity and defiance in the wake of the attack. It has come to represent Manchester's indomitable spirit and people have even had it tattooed on their bodies.

Manchester's rating saw the city climb 13 places ahead of London, which came 48th in the league table making it the widest gap between the two cities since the survey started in the 1990s. That's some serious stats right there.

Mike Blackburn, chair of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership, said: "This ranking not only reflects Manchester's resilience in the face of adversity but also marks a welcome return to the city's consistent, year-on-year improvements in the world rankings, highlighting the progress being made in achieving our ambition to be a top 20 global city by 2035.

"Manchester has a strong employment offering across its growing sectors, with excellent transport connectivity and work-life balance combining to make this a great city in which to live.

"Improvements in healthcare and education, alongside attractive qualities such as our thriving night-time economy and sports offering, continue to attract people from around the world to live, work and study in Manchester.

"It is great to see Manchester acknowledged as the most liveable city in the UK and continuing its ascent of the world rankings."

Austrian's capital city Vienna has been voted the 'most liveable city in the world.' Report writers said that 'it's proven to be one of the safest cities in Europe'.

War-torn Damascus in Syria has been ranked the least liveable city, followed by Dhaka in Bangladesh and Lagos in Nigeria.
