It might not be the most wonderful time of the year for another five months, but one London department store has already got those sleigh bells ringing with the opening of its Christmas shop - in July.

While Selfridges proudly gets the festivities going early each year, this time reps have claimed that it's the first in the world to unveil its Christmas section, which was open to the public from yesterday (29th July), 149 days before the big day and two days earlier than last year.

For those looking to get their Christmas shopping done early, you can already get your hands on a whole range of baubles ranging from £6 to £45, while there's also a £100 Santa yoga figurine which stands at an impressive 11 inches.

From September, keen shoppers will also be able to get their hands on a £95 gold velvet crown tree topper as well as a £2,000 pre-lit Bedminster fake Christmas tree, with so much more to look forward to in the coming weeks.

"We have so many customers visiting from all over the world, eager to snap up festive decorations and souvenirs on their London summer holidays which they can't buy at home," says Eleanor Gregory, Selfridges Christmas and home buyer.

"Our summer Christmas shop launch simple addresses the growing demand for convenience Christmas shopping outside the traditional Christmas season from many of our customers.

"They include a large number of domestic customers who love to Christmas shop very early in the year to get it wrapped and taken off their to-do list."

While many of us might find it absurd to crack on with our festive shopping so early in the year, Selfridges representatives said the ongoing commercial success of the shop's early launch translates into year-on-year record sales, so perhaps there's something to this Christmas in July thing.

While the festive section is available in the London store on Oxford Street, those who can't make it to the store can also pick up their goodies online.
