KFC To Launch Meat-Free 'Fried Chicken' In UK
If you've recently turned ditched meat but are craving fried chicken, or you have always been a veggie and just want to know what it tastes like, then KFC has just announced plans to release some chicken-free-fried-chicken.
The international fast-food chain says it will trial a vegetarian option later this year, before introducing the product in 2019.
As yet, few details about the product are available - it's not even know if it will be vegan or just vegetarian. However, it will use the Colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, so could be perfect for any newly-turned meat-dodgers who are missing the 'finger-licking' taste of KFC.
According to the Mirror, the meat-free 'chicken' will bring the 'great taste of KFC to new and existing customers who are changing their dining habits'.
In a statement to Foodbeast, a spokesperson said that 'development of the recipe is still in its very early stages, and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret'. The Colonel and his crew bloody love a secret, don't they?
The statement added: "Once we've perfected the recipe we aim to test with customers this year, and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019."
Whether those who choose to avoid meat would want to eat at KFC remains to be seen, but the option is there.
The company has also said the veggie version of its food will be healthier than the meaty ones we're all used to. KFC has previously announced plans to develop a new menu with meals containing 600 calories or fewer and will gradually drop the number of calories in its food by 20 percent over the next seven years.
It's hard-lines for US-dwelling veggies, though, as a spokesperson from the USA team told Foodbeast it had 'no plans related to the UK's test as this time'.
Last October, McDonald's announced it was trialing a vegan burger in Finland. Marketing Director of McDonald's in Finland, Christoffer Rönnblad said: "We are following the reaction with interest and we are happy to receive feedback. That's the purpose of the trial.
"The vegan hamburger required extensive in-house product development. The [vegan] hamburger steak is soy based.
"We were really passionate about finding a steak that tastes really good."
