Former Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas has shared an emotional tribute to his late wife, a year after she passed away from an aggressive form of cancer last November.

Dad-of-one Simon took to his Instagram account to admit that the month he 'had been dreading most' was finally here.

Gemma Thomas died suddenly just four days after being diagnosed cancer in November 2017, leaving behind Simon and their eight-year-old son Ethan.

"Darl I miss you so much," the TV presenter started in his emotional tribute to his wife on Friday.

He continued: "Just know that I'm looking after your boy. You would be beyond proud at how he has grown, matured and become such a rock for me.

"His emotional intelligence is beyond his young years."

Finishing his poignant message, Simon added: "We are being loved and supported by so many; but we miss you more with every day that takes us further from you, but keep waiting, we will be reunited one day."

Gemma was just 40 when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

In an earlier Instagram post marking the start of the month, Simon shared: "The month I've been dreading for so long is finally here.

"A time of the year I used to love is now ladened with memories I wish I didn't have. I'd do anything to fast forward to 2019."

His 79,000-strong following quickly sent messages of support to Simon, who quit his job on Sky Sports in April to spend more time with his young son.

He has spoken openly on his and his son's grief, candidly sharing how they've tried to cope with Gemma's death.

Shortly after she passed away, Simon confirmed the heartbreaking news on Twitter, writing: "Today I am crushed with indescribable pain.

"Just three days after falling ill with acute myeloid leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends."

Simon is now campaigning to raise awareness of blood cancer, and encouraging GPs to take more regular blood tests from their patients.
