Sleeping Naked Isn't The Solution To Staying Cool In This Heatwave

Sleeping Naked Isn't The Solution To Staying Cool In This Heatwave

You know what makes this heatwave more difficult and uncomfortable than it needs to be? The fact that, because the UK never - well, rarely - ever gets this hot, air conditioning is in short supply. By which we mean, beyond stores, there really isn't any.

So instead, we have to make to do with fans that don't really have all that much impact on a stuffy room and taking all our clothes off when we go to sleep in an attempt to be just a little bit cooler.

But it seems that's where we may be going wrong. According to sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley, it's actually better to wear pyjamas - but only if they're made of natural fibres.

Speaking to the Daily Mail he explained that wearing pyjamas can actually help you cool down.

"The pyjama fabric draws sweat away from your body and will make you feel a lot cooler and more comfortable," he explained.

There are some other things you can do, too, to help keep the heat levels down. The most obvious one is taking off any blankets, duvets or sheets that might be covering you, but sleeping without anything over you is a bit like celebrating Christmas in July - it's just inherently wrong.

Taking a lukewarm bath or shower before you go to bed can apparently help, as can chilling sheets and pillows, but your body will warm them up naturally throughout the night anyway, so neither of those things are long-term solutions.

So while it might seem counter-intuitive, investing in a pair of pyjamas made from natural fibres might be your best bet. Because let's face it - as hot as it is, investing in an air conditioner is just going to be a waste of money, because after this summer you'll probably never need it ever again.

Or, sod's law, as soon as you buy one, the sun will decide it's spent enough time warming up the UK to unusually high temperatures and will go back to its usual practice of hiding behind grey clouds and rain. Which would still technically mean that buying an air conditioner worked, so maybe that's not such a bad idea, after all.

Pyjamas are great, though. It just still doesn't seem right to wear them in the summer. Oh well.
