A woman who gained 110lbs in just a year was horrified to discover she had a cyst the size of a large watermelon growing on her ovary.

Kayla Rahn, 30, was perplexed about her weight gain, which had seen her go from 250lbs - to 360lbs in just over a year.

Insurance rep Kayla, who suffers from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), first noticed something was wrong in summer 2017 when she began to experience stomach pains.

Her rapid weight gain was so dramatic, she was forced to order size 28 trousers as she could no longer squeeze into size 22.

Kayla, of Montgomery, Arkansas, USA, was heartbroken when a stranger in a car park asked her if she was pregnant with twins as her stomach had grown so large and round.

Her mum, Debbie Rahn, 50, insisted her daughter visit the emergency room in Jackson Hospital, as the pain in her abdomen had become intense.

After a number of x-rays and an MRI, doctors discovered Kayla has a giant cyst on her ovary and booked her in for emergency surgery.

A team of doctors worked to remove the benign ovarian mucinous cystadenoma, pictured, on 26th May which weighed in at more than 50lbs.

Kayla said: "I was having a lot of stomach pain and I was gaining weight. In just over a year I had gone from 250lbs to 360lbs.

"I had been fitting comfortably in size 22 pants and but by the fall I was considering ordering work pants that were size 26/28.

"In the beginning, I thought it was just weight gain. I had been a server in a restaurant and I gave that up for an office job.

"I began to eat better and even joined a local gym after the holidays with my friends who were getting married but I didn't lose any weight.

"Even though I went to doctor appointments, they advised me to try and lose weight. It was really affecting my confidence. I looked nine months pregnant."

She continued: "I was at the grocery store with my mom and I was helping my little niece into the car when this woman asked me if I was pregnant with twins.

"It hurt my feelings of course, but more than that I was mad. I was shocked that anyone could even ask that.

"The pain was so bad I went to the ER in Jackson Hospital. My mom said I had been complaining for so long it was time to do something about it.

"I had x-rays and MRIs which is when they told me I had a huge mass growing inside me that needed to be removed. It was a three-hour surgery and they removed a 50lb cyst from me.

"Unfortunately, they also had to remove my ovary and fallopian tube.

"I have a scar now that's about a foot long from my chest cavity all the way to my private area. I had to have 40 staples to hold it together."

As Kayla recovered in the hospital's intensive care unit, a nurse asked her if she wanted to see a photograph of the giant mass, which doctors had taken after surgery. Kayla said she was shocked by its size, which she said reminded her of a large watermelon.

She said: "When I saw the picture, I immediately asked the nurse to text it to me. I couldn't believe that something that big had grown inside me."

Dr Gregory Jones said Kayla's cyst was the largest he had ever treated in his career.

"I had never seen a cyst this large and personally had never removed one like this - it weighed about 50lbs.

"The nature of a cyst like Kayla's is that the cystic lining will keep producing fluids and it will continue to fill up like a balloon.

"Unfortunately in this case, healthy ovarian tissue couldn't be salvaged but the cyst was benign so Kayla is on the path to full recovery."

After her surgery, Kayla has lost a further 25lbs bringing her total weight loss to 75lbs. The 30-year-old is thrilled to fit into her old jeans again and hopes to lose another 100lbs before next year when she hopes to marry her manager boyfriend Jonathan Pittman, 33.

"It was sad to lose my ovary and fallopian tube because that lowers my chances of conceiving naturally but I'm just glad my life is finally getting back to normal.

"I've lost about 75lbs since surgery, but my dream is to get down to 200lbs. I'd love to get married next year - but my boyfriend hasn't popped the question just yet."
