Why This Woman's Candid Post About Childbirth Went Viral

Why This Woman's Candid Post About Childbirth Went Viral

A woman's candid post about the difficulties of childbirth has gone viral online, with readers praising it as 'one of the best posts I've ever seen' and thanking the young mum 'for being brave enough to share'.

Autumn Benjamin, 22, gave birth to her daughter, Layla, on 28th January 2018 - but she admits there were many of things about motherhood that she was totally unprepared for.

The mother, from Tennessee, uploaded a picture of herself nursing her child on Facebook, along with the revealing message about all she'd learnt.

"I've debated on this post for a while but I've decided that I'd show the hard parts of the aftermath of giving birth, and the ultimate sacrifice that mothers make from day one," Autumn wrote in a Facebook post, which has been shared more than 130,000 times.

She said: "I was in new territory. Learning to breastfeed this little human being that I just brought into the world. Wearing these big mesh panties, still sporting a pregnant belly. No-one told me your belly doesn't go down immediately. No one told me I'd be bleeding out.

"No one told me that I would spend hours crying and full of emotion. I remember just laying there in the hospital bed crying. I was crying because my baby girl was finally here. FINALLY! But wait... that means she isn't protected inside of me anymore. And that's a scary feeling."

Recalling how she would cry uncontrollably in the shower, Autumn added that she suffered some painful tears during the birth.

"I was also in so much pain," she said. "No-one tells you that typically with a 'quick delivery' comes a bad rip. I ripped all the way up and down, and also side to side. The weeks following, I couldn't walk. I couldn't use the bathroom. I wore these big diapers. I never thought I would be normal again. Kevin had to help me do EVERYTHING from pee, to walk up stairs."

Autumn ended her post with a message about how becoming a mother is the 'ultimate sacrifice.'

She wrote: "You give up your body for nine months to grow this little baby. You go through labor and delivery. You go through the emotions that come with childbirth.

"But most importantly, moms give up who they were before they were a mother. Most moms give up a lot of their hobbies, dreams, and plans. Moms put their lives on hold so their babies can live out theirs. We deal with so many emotions that we internalize - just so we can be mothers to our babies.

"Don't ever discredit a mother. You don't know the half. I used to be Autumn. Fun loving, crazy, outgoing Autumn. But now I'm Layla's mama. And I'm okay with that."

Reacting to the post, Megan Richardson called it "one of the best posts I've ever seen."

Brandi Scott said: "I cried reading this, remembering how real and similar all of those things were. Thank you for being brave enough to share."

And Sarah DiPhillipo Drayton added: "I love this. I just gave birth to my son four days ago. I have been an emotional mess to say the least. From being so thankful to feeling so empty without my baby inside me with me all the time. The emotions I am going through and the uncontrollable crying I can relate to. We do give up so much but it is all so worth it."
