There's arguably nothing more frustrating than being unable to get to sleep, but this military technique promises to help you get to sleep in just two minutes.

The system is said to be used by soldiers to ensure they get enough sleep, and it claims to help anyone sleep within just 120 seconds.

It is revealed in a book called 'Relax and Win: Championship Performance' and is said to have a 96 per cent success rate, according to Joe.

The US army technique has long been used by the American military and is said to have the most success after a few weeks of practice.

It's reported the technique first came into practice when military leaders noticed their pilots' decision-making abilities were being compromised by lack of sleep and stress.

Pilots were finding it difficult to wind down and relax enough to be able to sleep even after they'd clocked off, meaning their lack of sleep led to fatigue, which often led to poor decision making.

But how does it actually work? According to the book, you must start by relaxing the muscles in your face - this includes in the tongue, jaw and muscles around the eyes.

Then, you must drop your shoulders as low as they'll go, before relaxing your upper and lower arm on one side, before doing the same on the other.

Next, you need to breath out and relax your chest before relaxing the legs, starting with the thighs and then the lower legs.

Finally, after 10 seconds of deep relaxation, you need to completely clear your mind.

Lloyd Bud Winter, the author of the book, has suggested picturing one of these images will help in switching off your mind.

  • Lying in a canoe on a calm lake, nothing but blue sky above you.
  • Snuggled in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room.
  • Saying "don't think, don't think, don't think" over and over for ten seconds.

It's certainly worth a try.
