Tesco has massively expanded its delivery operation, adding over 120,000 slots in two weeks, in response to coronavirus demand.

The supermarket announced it now had around 780,000 home delivery and click & collect slots available, up from 660,000 two weeks ago, with another 100,000 to be added soon.

It comes as the supermarket has added more than 35,000 new employees since 21st February, including thousands of new delivery drivers, store pickers and shop staff to help handle the increased demand as a result of coronavirus.

Currently, the country is following government guidelines to stay at home with advice to only make one trip to the shops per day if needed. As a result, many people are taking to online shopping in order to social distance.

In a statement, Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: "We're doing everything we can to increase the number of slots available and to support vulnerable people.

"Through a series of measures including more drivers, pickers and vans, we'll expand the number of slots available each week; but this still isn't enough to meet the demand.

"For this reason it is vital that customers who can come into stores and shop for themselves do so - so we can free up as many slots as possible for vulnerable people."

Lewis added: "We thank our regular home shopping customers for their patience as we do all we can to make this service available to as many people who need it as possible."

Tesco is also capping shoppers to 80 items per basket to prevent stockpiling, and limiting products to a maximum of three per customer.

"We'll be capping the number of items you can add to your online basket to 80," the supermarket explained in a customer email.

"This means that if you make a change to an existing tesco.com order or place a new order, you'll only be able to order a maximum of 80 items.

"To help give everyone access to the essentials, every product will still be limited to a maximum of 3 per customer."

In addition, orders will arrived bagged to reduce the amount of time needed on the doorstep for delivery.
