A dad has sparked a social media debate after revealing the comments left on his son's homework by his teacher.

Chris Piland, from Pennsylvania, is calling for the teacher to be fired after they called his son's homework efforts "absolutely pathetic".

The dad says he was "beyond frustrated" by Kamdyn's teacher, and decided to share the remarks left on his son's maths homework on social media for all see.

"My son Kamdyn's teacher has been so rude to him and myself all year he comes home with this and I am beyond frustrated that someone would write this on a childs work such great motivation," Chris wrote on Facebook on 16th April.

Kamdyn, who is in second grade (the equivalent to year three in the UK), had to answer as many mathematical questions as possible in three minutes for the homework.

He managed to complete 13, which seems like a decent effort for a seven or eight-year-old child.

But scribbled across his piece of homework were the words: "Absolutely pathetic he answered 13 in 3 min! Sad," complete with a sad face in red ink.

The teacher's comments were met with a divided response from other social media users.

One person slammed: "This needs to go to the board of education this is unacceptable she is trying to kill this child's self esteem sad she should not be teaching."

Another added: "This sucks. I hope that they at least move him to a different teacher. Good luck."

However, others sided with the teacher and claimed his son's maths skills weren't up to scratch.

"When are you going to address the fact that your son is lacking in his math skills? Seems like misplaced anger," commented one.

Since the post was shared, a petition has been created to get the teacher fired from the school.

More than 16,000 people have signed the petition (at the time of writing), and the school board is said to be investigating.

School superintendent Rose Minniti said: "It's a personnel issue and the results of that are not going to be dictated by social media. It's going to be dictated by the facts and evidence.

"As always with everything, we're going to try to do what's best for the students and what we need to do for the employee under investigation."
