Instead of begging for treats, this dog decided to pay for his food using a leaf and some cute puppy eyes after watching humans exchange money for cookies.

The pup lives on the campus of Colombia's Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare and works as a guardian in return for food, attention and a safe place to sleep.

He soon became aware of the snack shop on campus, where students were buying cookies, which they would sometimes share with the dog.

One day, the pooch took matters into his own hands and tried to purchase some cookies himself by walking up to the shop with a leaf in his mouth and his tail wagging.

Unable to resist his wagging tail and puppy dog eyes, staff gave in and treated the dog to a cookie.

After realising he could swap the leaf for treats, the pooch began doing it on a regular basis.

Teacher Angela Garcia Bernal told The Dodo: "He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange.

"Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie."

Angela added: "When you first see it, you almost want to cry. He's found a way to make himself understood. He's very intelligent."

Long term store assistant, Gladys Barreto, said: "He comes for cookies every day.

"He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase."

Staff at the store make sure they have special dog friendly biscuits for his visits and limit his purchase to just one every few days to stop his waistline getting too big.
