Feel like having a bit of a cry? We can help. A highly-emotional Twitter thread has seen thousands of people talking about the kindest things a stranger has ever done for or said to them.

Canadian writer Nicole Cliffe asked her followers on Monday: "What is the kindest thing a stranger has done or said to you?"

And the tear-jerking responses came flooding in since the tweet was posted.

Since then it has received a whopping 5.7K retweets, 21K likes and more than 6.6K comments revealing Twitter users own stories of kindness and generosity.

Using Twitter under the username @Nicole_Cliffe, Nicola began by sharing her own personal story about a random act of kindness.

She wrote: "One baby of mine used to get airsick and the first time it happened we were just leaving the gate and there was puke all over my pants and the seat cushion so they had to BRING THE PLANE BACK to replace the seat and seatbelt and everyone hated me and...

"I was standing, covered in puke, holding my now only diaper-clad baby and trying not to cry while business travelers glared at me, and then a flight attendant took my baby and gave me a pair of yoga pants from her carry-on and wrote her address on a napkin so I could mail them back.

She concluded: "I firmly believe that she will go to heaven no matter what she may do in the rest of her life."

Cue thousands of Twitter users chiming in with their own heartwarming experiences.

Another Twitter user was then inspired to share his own emotive story about an incident that occurred when he was working at an LGBT bookstore some years ago.

He said: "Oh God I can't even tell this story and not cry. I used to manage an LGBT bookstore, when bookstores were still a thing. One night, a caller says he thinks he might be gay and is considering self-harm. We were not a crisis center! But as long as we're talking, he's safe, right?

"So I talk to this guy and I answer questions, and I try to be encouraging and I'm maybe sounding a little frantic and I'm definitely ignoring the 4-5 customers in the store, and this angel of a woman puts her hand on my shoulder and asks for the phone. "My turn," she says.

"And SHE, this 50-something lesbian talks to this stranger on the phone. And a LINE FORMS BEHIND HER. Every customer in that store knows that call, knows that feeling, and every person takes a turn talking to that man. That story comforts me so much to this day," he concluded.

Another Twitter user talked about how the Australian healthcare system's kindness saved her life and changed her life better: "Had 1 day to start IVF with no warning due to aggressive cancer diagnosis. Private cost $10,000; Doc made a call to Public hospital; got in same day. Nurses all stayed late to get my treatment underway. Cost: basically free. Got two eggs and 3.5 years later had my baby daughter."

Others told stories about how strangers saved them from unkind actions and words from their families. One woman tweeted about being on a dinner date and mentioning that when she wore a maroon dress to a wedding her mother told her she would "look like the side of a barn."

She continued: "(Welcome to my childhood). At that point, a hot British guy from the next table stood up, came over and said very firmly, "I just want you to know, I think you're beautiful.""

"And he walked off. Never forgot that much-needed support' she added. "

But others were comforted by strangers acting like family. One person tweeted: "My mother had just died after a brutal fight with cancer. I walk aimlessly & eventually wandered into a Mexican diner. I had delicious green chilaquiles, and then realized I didn't have my wallet. The owner told not to worry. It was exactly what my mom would have done."

Others who didn't have stories to share explained that the thread had helped them through their day. One user tweeted: "i didn't know how much i needed this thread until i started reading it."

While another said: "I wish there was a permanent feed like this.. we need to focus more on kindness and that there is kind ppl out there.. sometimes i feel kindness is like a unicorn, you hear abt it but never see it.."

What's the kindest thing a stranger has ever done for or said to you?
