In news to tell your boss immediately, a UK company has cut its working week down to four days - and says its staff have never been happier.

Employees at law firm Portcullis Legals in Plymouth were even given a pay rise to ease their concerns that the new scheme was just a cost-cutting exercise.

The office stays open later in the evening and remains opens five days a week, but staff rotate through four-day shift patterns from Monday to Friday.

Unsurprisingly, the company's boss say the staff are happier having three days off a week, meaning in turn the customers are happier too.

Managing director Trevor Worth told Plymouth Live: "The initial results have been heartening - our team is happier and our customers are receiving a better service."

Slowly but surely, more and more businesses are switching to a four-day week in order to make staff happier and more productive.

The Plymouth law firm introduced the shorter week permanently following a five-month trial with nine members of staff.

Trevor added: "I've contacted businesses far and wide to find out the benefits and pitfalls of the four-day week, working with academics and industry leaders to find out the best way to apply the four-day week to Portcullis.

"The response has been extraordinary and there's a real passion to help other firms achieve a happier working week for their staff."

And with longer opening hours during the week, Trevor believes customers are also happier.

He explained: "This means our valued clients can contact us later in the evening. Which is often more convenient. Our staff have been more motivated and productive.

"I'm delighted we've been able to make it work and provide an even better service for customers, and a great working environment for our team.

"Values and purpose are very important to us, as is the well-being of every team member."

Any jobs going, Trevor?
