Expert stuns after sharing how often you should actually wash your towels

The answer may shock you

I'm sure we've all wondered at some point or another just how frequently we should wash our towels, with many of us not actually having a clue what the correct amount even is.

Luckily for anyone in the dark about towel-washing etiquette, one expert has come to the rescue and shared her tips on all things towels.

Professional organiser, Anita Birges, who hails from Sydney, Australia, took to Instagram to share her guidelines for benchmark household cleanliness. Have a look:

Now, we all know there's no great joy than cosying up in freshly-washed bedsheets, but drying off with a fluffy crisp towel is a close second-place contender.

So, to ensure you're getting that fresh feeling every time you hop out the shower, be sure to follow Anita's advice on how often should you be washing things like your bath towels, bathmats, and your bathrobe.

Speaking in one video, Anita revealed: "Let me tell you, I was a little bit shocked and you might be as well."

"Forget the sniff test and get real‼️" Anita explained in the caption to her 139k followers.

The expert continued: "These items are hanging around the bathroom.

"The dampest place in your home, soaking up all that moisture which is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria."

It's gross but it's true.

So, Anita went on: "You need to be washing them more often than you might think."

The woman explained that she opts for the 'cotton cycle' at 60°C on her washing machine to really make sure she 'kills all those nasties'.

Anita says people should be washing their bath towels 'every 3-5 uses' and their bath mats and bathrobes at least once 'every week'.

Such guidelines, she explains, are based on uses rather than days as some people shower more than once a day, whereas others may not.

OK - so we know about the towels hanging up in our bathrooms, but what about the ones in our kitchen?

Well, Anita informs that we should all be washing our tea towels on a 'weekly' basis.

"Repeat after me, never throw dirty tea towels in the laundry hamper on top of clothes," she wrote on Body + Soul.

"Gross. Enter: the down-and-dirty bucket. This is a bucket I use to collect things like microfibre clothes, tea towels, hand towels that might be used for the floor."

Just like the bath towels, the tea towels get whacked in the washing machine on a high temp to blast all those grim germs away.

Guess you really do learn something new everyday.
