Picture this: you're minding your own business on an aeroplane mid-way through your flight when a loose bat starts frantically flapping through your cabin.

Sure, it's never our first concern when heading on holiday - but that's exactly what happened on a Spirit Airlines flight last week.

And someone caught the whole terrifying ordeal on camera, obvs.

Passengers were given a rude awakening at 6am on the American airbus as they jetted from Charlotte, North Carolina to Newark, New Jersey on Wednesday, 31st July.

Swooping across the plane and only just missing the heads of passengers below, the usually nocturnal creature caused absolute mayhem as it ducked and dived about the cabin, moving at lightening speed.

As you'd expect, its unwelcome appearance caused quite a stir on board, with multiple passengers hopping out of their seats in shock, and one even sprinting to the toilet cubicle to take shelter.

Screams could also be heard in the chilling footage, while several on board questioned what was zooming around above their heads.

However, it wasn't long before they worked it out, with another shouting: "This is ridiculous!" when they deduced it was a bat.

Eventually, the bat was reportedly ushered into the toilet between a book and a cup, where it remained for the rest of the trip.

Naturally, Twitter users were in shock as the clips begun to do the rounds online.

"Half the plane finna be vampires when y'all land" (sic), one commented.

As a second teased: "Bat storage fee was $15 easy choice to let it fly around".

However, others were more distracted by one man silently snoozing in the back of another clip, seemingly oblivious to what was going on around him.

Recalling the horrifying incident after it went viral, one passenger named Peter Scattini said: "This happened two days ago at 6am on a flight from Charlotte to Newark.

"The bat appeared about 30 minutes into the flight. The bat was caught by a passenger between a book and a cup and was locked in the bathroom for the rest of the flight."

Spirit Airlines have been approached for comment.

We don't know about you, but we'll be checking the luggage holders obsessively on every plane journey from now on...
