Couple who spent over £20,000 on Harry Potter-themed wedding told to 'grow up'

Couple who spent over £20,000 on Harry Potter-themed wedding told to 'grow up'

Some people called on the couple to 'grow up'

A couple who spent more than £20,000 on their Harry Potter-themed wedding say they have been horribly trolled online, with haters telling them to ‘grow up’.

Newlyweds Craig, 36, and Katherine 28, decided their big day was the perfect opportunity to channel their love for all things Hogwarts, even asking guests to wear colours that represented the school house they had been assigned on the invitations.

The pair, who are both primary school teachers, knew they were meant to be when they met each other for the first time and saw they had matching Harry Potter tattoos.

But despite being huge fans of the franchise, the reaction to their special themed wedding hasn’t been completely positive – with some people saying the concept is the ‘cringiest thing ever’.

Craig, from Chicago, said: "We both share a love for the series, and because of that I proposed to her in front of Hogwarts Castle at Harry Potter World in Orlando. Katherine and I both aren't huge fans of ceremony and traditional weddings, and we knew we wanted to have a different wedding.

The wedding was Harry Potter-themed.

Guests even had wands, too.

"It's funny actually, Katherine and I both have the same Harry Potter related tattoo, but we got them before we even met.

"There wasn't a single unsupportive person at our wedding. There were zero negative remarks before, at or after our wedding from guests. What we did hear a lot was that it was the best wedding people had been to.

"Katherine's grandparents who are in their 70s came up to us multiple times throughout the night telling us they didn't know what to expect, but it was the most fun they had at a wedding in a long time."

Complete with themed table settings.

While the negativity online could have easily put a dampener on the day, Craig and Katherine – who even shared their first dance while holding wands – aren’t fussed by the criticism.

Craig continued: "Katherine and I thought it was kind of funny. It never really bothered us, however I really never realised how much people on the internet think that their opinions matter."

They thought of everything.

"A lot of people kept saying stuff like ‘I'm sure everyone in the audience is so uncomfortable’, and ‘the ring bearer must be so embarrassed’ but that couldn't be further from the truth. Our friends and family are so used to our shenanigans, by now they just go along with it."

The cost of the wedding included:

  • Decoration - £4000
  • Venue - £6,450
  • Catering (a 'comfort food buffet') - £3,600
  • Photographer - £1,360
  • Wedding planner (who was a friend) - £800
  • Bartenders (who were friends) - £480
  • Alcohol - around £1600
  • Dress and suit - around £960
  • Party bus shuttle - £1045
  • DJ - £562
They loved their big day, despite the hate online.

Groom Craig added: "There were a lot of people who loved it, but most of that were a mixture of comments like ‘Grow up’, ‘Harry Potter adults are worse than Disney adults’, ‘why is the groom wearing a backwards hat?’, and ‘this is the cringiest thing ever, how embarrassing.’

"Also a few people told us they'd walk out if they went to a wedding like that.”
