If you're one of the 13 million people in the UK who suffer from hayfever, you've no doubt searched high and low for a solution to the pesky pollen allergy.

Well, the answer to the irritating ailment may be less expensive and more accessible than you thought: it could all be down to that tub of Vaseline in your bathroom cabinet.

Hayfever suffers are insisting that a dab of Vaseline can make all the difference when it comes to feeling allergic.

They say to apply a layer of Vaseline around the inside of their nostrils, making sure to layer the petroleum jelly as high as possible. You can also apply a layer around your eyes to stop them from feeling itchy, dry and runny.

The solution might sound a bit strange, but it works perfectly by acting as a barrier to trap pollen before you breathe it in.

Hayfever has affected sufferers particularly badly this year, with a very high pollen count causing heightened symptoms such as itchy eyes, nasal congestion and sneezing.

The tips are all over Twitter, with helpful sufferers providing their advice on the platform.

One wrote: "Been suffering badly with hayfever the last couple of days, then my daughter said to put Vaseline up my nose! Haven't sneezed all day and only cost me 80p, made up thought she was taking the p*ss".

While another posted: "To all hayfever suffers out there, get some Vaseline put it on your nose/nostrils and put some on your eyelashes and around your eyes. It stops the pollen getting in, it's honestly been life changing for me".

Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy says that the hack "does make sense, but Vaseline cannot block the whole airway, and some pollen is still likely to get through."

She explains: "Pollen gets into the throat, nasal passageways, sinuses, and lungs, not just through the nose, but also through the mouth, and eyes.

"For best results, I would suggest applying Vaseline on the eyelashes, around the eyes, and right up inside the nose as far as you can reach - not just inside each nostril.

It then makes sense to continue to breathe through your nose and not through your mouth, as much as possible."

Aside from trying out this Vaseline hack, Dr Deborah also suggests "staying indoors when the pollen count is high, keeping windows and doors closed, and vacuuming regularly, preferably using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter."

Combined with antihistamines, eye drops, nose sprays and regular vacuuming, you'll be armed with all the tools you need to stop hayfever driving you crazy this summer.

Who knew the solution to our hayfever woes was so simple?
