Netflix reveals release dates for final season of The Crown

It's almost time to bid farewell to Netflix's smash hit drama The Crown once and for all.

The streaming service has announced that the final season will be released in two parts, and thankfully, we can all mark our calendars with both release dates.

Season six covers events from 1997 through to 2005 and will broadly span the tenure of former Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Bertie Carvel).

Part 1 will see Elizabeth Debicki reprise her role as Princess Diana, alongside Dominic West as Prince Charles. Imelda Staunton continues her reign as Queen Elizabeth II, alongside Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip and Lesley Manville returns as Princess Margaret.

Also returning are Salim Daw as Mohamed Al Fayed and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.

Making their debuts are Rufus Kampa (as Prince William) and Fflyn Edwards (as Prince Harry).

The first four episodes will be released in Part 1. The episodes depict a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before the fateful car crash in Paris that claimed both of their lives in 1997.

While the final chapter - Part 2 - is told across six episodes. Fans will see Prince William navigating life at Eton after his mother's tragedy, Queen Elizabeth approaching her Golden Jubilee, and blossoming hope in William and Kate.

To tide us over as the show returns for one final time, Netflix released the official logline: "A relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences.

"Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate."

Since it debuted on Netflix in 2016, The Crown has been a massive success, by racking up numerous nominations for multiple prestigious awards, including 15 BAFTA nominations, 10 Golden Globe Nominations (including 4 wins), 69 Emmy Nominations across 5 seasons (with 21 wins across 4 seasons) and more.

Season six will be the second season to air following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on 6 September, 2022.

Part 1 will be released November 16, 2023. Part 2 follows on December 14, 2023.
